Saturday…
Mike went out in the garage and pulled the wheels off of his truck and put on the wheels with his winter snow tires. While out there doing that, he revisited the memory of when he bought those rims several years ago, and the good deal he’d gotten.
Seven years ago…
Mike was looking for a nice set of rims on which he could mount his winter snow tires for his truck, so come winter and spring, he could just pop the wheels off and on instead of having to mount and remount tires on rims each year.
He ended up finding an entire van for sale for $500. The van was rough. Was probably worth the $500, but not much more.
He knocked on the door and spoke to the owner. He told the man that he was only looking for rims for him winter tires and that those were perfect. He offered the man $250. The man said he didn’t want to sell just the rims and that Mike would have to take the whole van.
Mike said he’d take the whole van, but that $250 was all he had, and he wouldn’t pay $500 because he would keep the rims and junk the van anyway.
The guy took him at his word and gave him the entire van for $250 assuming that Mike needed the rims and was really going to junk the van. He’d hoped to get more for the van, but it’d been sitting a long time and he’d pretty much lost hope so he was willing to take the $250 and let it go.
Sunday…
We got about 6 inches of snow. It was Mike’s weekend to be on call and he got called yesterday afternoon to an accident scene about 2 miles up the road.
He got on the scene and hooked the truck he was going to be towing. The driver rode in the tow truck too, happily unharmed in the accident. They drove just another mile east and the man directed Mike into his driveway.
Mike immediately recognized the house as being where he’d bought that van all those years ago. He turned to his passenger and asked, “So how long have you lived here?”
“Oh, at least 20 years,” the man replied.
“Then it must have been you who sold me that white van all those years ago.”
The guys eyes widened in recognition and he smiled and said, “Wow! It IS you. I didn’t even remember that until you said it!”
They chatted a moment and Mike told him about how he still had those rims and he’d JUST been remounting them onto his truck the day before and had been thinking about that day.
Then, in a beautiful demonstration of kindness, Mike worked the tow bill around the best he could so the guy paid as little as possible for his tow and accident scene clean-up.
I thought this was a really neat story and wanted to share it. It’s not every day that we’re given the opportunity to repay a kindness that’s been extended to us by someone we don’t know.
And it was SO synchronous the way it happened. It was nice that Mike got the chance to revisit the memory and appreciate it again right before being presented with an opportunity to reciprocate.
Isn’t Life divine?
