Half Moon Book Review *)

June 10th, 2011

Greeting my friends.  Please forgive my being a few days slow on the draw.

Alan has been here since Wednesday and when your sixteen year old only visits for three days, once a month, you don’t spend all your time on your laptop writing.  Dang kid will be eighteen in fourteen short months and who KNOWS when I’ll see him after that!

So thank you all for understanding why I’ve needed to be off swimming and cooking out and playing silly boardgames.

Today’s Book:

The Book of God~ The Bible as a Novel

By Walter Wangerin Jr.

I’m going to preface this review by first saying:
I was raised in a Christian home.  I had the Bible read to me, a little at a time, twice during my youngest childhood years.  I have always loved the Bible stories I was told.  I especially love the new testament and all things Jesus.

On to my review.

WHAT AN AMAZING BOOK!!!

I LOVE it!  I’m not even finished with it yet because it’s SO long.  I have it on MP3, so I have been listening to it during my morning walk or in the car mostly.

There are twenty eight, hour to hour and a half long chapters.  I am currently on chapter twenty.

There is no interpretation in here.  This is no one’s opinion on what the Bible means.  This is the Bible, told as a story.  The lineage, the miracles, those stories that we all know, and a good many that most of us DON’T know.

So much incest and murder!  Sordid affairs and betrayal!  Edge of your seat kind of stuff!

It’s written in a more modernized language, though it doesn’t stray completely from the original grammar.  And by original, I mean the King James version.  I am very well aware that’s not really the original anything, but I think you know what I mean :)

I really can’t tell you how much I am LOVING this book.  But I am a lover of the Bible.  If you have any interest in the Bible, you’ll love this.  I am so happy that I own this audio book and I can say without a doubt that I WILL listen to it again.

My raking for this book~

Hoard it! ~ I would put this book on my shelf and never let it leave my house.

Today’s Book:

Circle of Three

By Isobel Bird

I’m currently 3/4 of the way through book six of this series.

Have you ever wished someone could explain Wicca and witchcraft to you as though you were just learning?  Why not learn along with the girls in this series?

They have a local metaphysical bookstore where they take classes throughout their year and a day of studying.  They go to rituals and celebrate sabbats all while dealing with everyday issues in high school, and common ebbs and flows in relationships all around them.

In book one we’re introduced to Kate, Annie, and Cooper when the girls are thrust together after Kate uses a spell in a spell book while researching witchcraft for a report.  The spell backfires terribly and she recruits the help of Annie, the only other person who’d checked out the same book from the library, to set things right again.

Little do they know, the girls are beginning a beautiful journey into the Spiritual and metaphysical.

And I am REALLY loving going along with them~

These books read VERY fast and easy reads thanks to their Young Adult status, but they’re not immature.  I find them very highly engrossing, and could easily read one in less than a day.

How oh how would I rate this entire series of books?

I would ~ Lend it!

In fact, I think I’m going to buy them all so my kids can read them, and any other children I intend to ruin ;)

Hoard it! ~ I would put this book on my shelf and never let it leave my house.

Lend it! ~ I would lend this book out with my name inside, and insist on a fairly prompt return.

Give it! ~ I would pass this book on with the hopes that the next person to read it gets as much or more from it than I.

RavenousToday’s Book:

Ravenous – A Food Lover’s Journey from Obsession to Freedom
By Dayna Macy

I have a Hay House book on review today!

They sent me this book, for free, in exchange for my publishing a true, and honest review of my thoughts on it.  They insist I tell you that.  And now that the legalities are complete… on we go!

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

A chronic over eater from childhood, Dayna Macy takes the reader on her journey to crack the code of her food obsessions. She tells stories of memories from days past of finding comfort and acceptance in food, and goes through self analyzation trying to break free from her addiction.

She takes the reader along with her to visit the places where her favorite foods are made in order to gain a more respectful and personal perspective.

She finds her health practices and cements them into her life.

All in all, this was a nice story.  To be perfectly honest, the first half of the book was a little lost on me.  I don’t really care about the making of cheese and the other foods she observes.  She even states at the end of the section that going through that process didn’t do a whole lot for her and her transformation, so I sort of wonder why she included it in the book.  I’m sure others must have enjoyed it.  It was informative.

I was touched by chapter ten which was about visiting the slaughter house, and the six chapters thereafter held me captive.  This was the portion of the book where she REALLY began to transform and grow, and those are always my favorite parts.

It was a good story and worth reading, but it’s not something I need on my shelf.  I will probably pass it along to a friend with my blessings to pass on as they see fit.

In other words ~ I’d Give It!

I’ve decided that I need a rating system of some sort, beyond just telling you how much I love a book, so here’s what I’ve settled on…

Hoard it! ~ I would put this book on my shelf and never let it leave my house.

Lend it! ~ I would lend this book out with my name inside, and insist on a fairly prompt return.

Give it! ~ I would pass this book on with the hopes that the next person to read it gets as much or more from it than I.
