Parenting Conscious Creators

July 10th, 2010

I love talking to my kids about magic and conscious creation.  They’re such fantastic students.  Kids don’t have all their beliefs figured out yet, so this stuff comes rather naturally to them.

Today our heatwave ended.  About 3am a beautiful thunderstorm rolled into the area bringing much temperature relief.  It proceeded to rain all morning and all day.  I can’t wait to see the effect on my garden!

I had today(Friday) scheduled as our grocery day because I completely missed the boat yesterday.  About noon as we were sitting down to lunch, Eddie says, “I don’t think we should go to the store today, Mom.  If we do, we’re going to get completely soaked!”

Seeing an immediate teaching opportunity, I replied, “We’ll get completely soaked if we’re focusing on it like that!  We need to talk about what we want to create, not what we don’t want.  Can you say it again, only this time say what you want to happen.”

“I want it to stop raining”

“Well, that’s better, but you’re still missing it a little.  Raining is what you have, and what you don’t want, right?  So if raining is what you DON’T want to see, what is it that you DO want to see?”

“Not raining.” (sigh… 8…)

“Okay!  How about this!  We create with our thoughts and words, right?”

“Yeah!”

“So show me how you can create *Not*.  You can create rain.  You can create DRY.  You can create SUN.  How do you CREATE not rain?”

(Dawning recognition with eyes lighting up)

“OOOoooohhhhhh!  I get it Mom!  *Not something*’s opposite is always something else!  I can’t make a NOT so I have to find the thing that the not stands for!” (I had to write that one down as soon as he said it so the quote would be accurate. LOL)

*Hug*  “You’re a smart cookie, Kid”

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

So, now we have to make a statement about what it is we actually want to see.  We collectively decided that we wanted the rain to clear and the weather to dry out long enough for us to go to the store and back so we could remain warm and dry.  That was our official intention.

We were about 5 minutes from leaving the house when the rain stopped.  This was about 2 hours after our original intention.  Eddie comes in from the porch grinning.  I see him coming and think that he must be about to tell me that our intention is happening because the rain’s stopped.

Nope.  He says, “HA!  Weather man said rain ALL DAY and it stopped.  He was wrong!”

I said, “Or maybe it was unfair to expect him to give an accurate forecast when we’re sitting here consciously trying to alter the weather and bend it to our own will.”

This was when it hit him that we had in fact asked the rain to stop by the time we left and here we are preparing to walk out the door and the heavy rain we’d been experiencing all day thus far had stopped short.  I grinned at his mildly stunned expression and finished collecting my things.

We left and drove 10 miles to the grocery store.  We were there for about 45 minutes and then drove the same 10 miles back home.  Including loading bags into the van and then back out of the van and into the house, the total time spent was about 1.5-2 hours.  It didn’t rain the whole time we were gone.  The sun wasn’t out and it looked dark and angry outside, but it didn’t rain.

We got everything in the house and the van parked again and after we were home for about 15 minutes, it started to rain lightly and it continued for most of the rest of the afternoon, but we never got wet.

The kids were downright impressed with our little bit of magic making.  I love when things work out so nicely because as we all know, the more you see your own consciousness at work around you, the easier it is to believe in your own power.

I want these boys to always know their own power and respect it and rejoice in it, as I do.

The Big Chill

July 8th, 2010

Today is supposed to be our final day in the 90s for a little bit.  I’m looking forward to the much more comfortable 80s because I can turn off the air conditioning.

I am NOT a fan of AC.  Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate it’s purpose and I am grateful to have central air in my home, but I am not a fan of walking into a place from outside and actually getting chills and shivering from it.

I carry a sweatshirt in my van for trips to the grocery store.  Are they aware that it’s unnecessary to make the entire building the same temperature as the refrigerated section?  Sometimes I wonder.

I am personally of the belief that it’s this going from very hot to very cold repeatedly that makes people susceptible to colds and flu in the middle of the summer.  How can your immune system function properly when you’re constantly trying to re-balance your body temperature?  That’s quite a strain.

We’ve spent this heatwave with our AC set on 76-78 degrees and we turn it off on our way to bed at night.  No, 78 degrees is NOT too hot.  Don’t believe me?  Go stand out in the sun on a 95 degree day (like we’ve had lately) for 15 minutes and water my garden.  Then come on in the house and tell me it’s not cool, comfortable, and perfect inside.  I turn it down to 76 during the part of the day when I’m cleaning.  Being up and moving around a lot creates heat, so I grab those extra two degrees to make cleaning up more tolerable.

Fans are a great alternative to AC, but there are a couple things to remember.

Running many fans can be just as much of an energy drain as running AC.  I did an experiment last summer and turned on every fan in the house.  Then I went out and recorded a video of the speed in which my electric meter was moving.  Then I went in, turned off ALL the fans, turned on the AC, and took another video.  I was shocked to see that when all the fans were on, the meter was actually spinning FASTER.  I was drawing LESS energy by just running the AC.

Also…

Fans cool people, not rooms!  If you sit in front of a fan, it blows air across your skin causing your sweat to evaporate creating a cooling effect.  If you run a fan in an empty room, you circulate warm air in circles.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

SO!  Keep that AC temperature setting up.  You don’t really need to freeze.  You’ll feel better if you don’t.  You’ll be healthier if you don’t.  Plus, you get the added benefits of BEING Green by conserving energy and SAVING green by not pumping it into your electric bill.  And you can help your AC along by sitting near a fan, but if you’re not going to be in the room, fans are a waste of energy.

Make it a GREAT summer by staying healthy, saving money, and doing something caring for our Mother Earth.

New Beginnings

June 7th, 2010

Today is a new beginning for us here in the Baugher household.  The official start of summer vacation.

We’re off to the library today!  I got the new chore lists printed out yesterday and we’re ready to begin our summer adventure!

I’ve learned that the trick to surviving a summer vacation with all my hair intact is to plan and schedule something to do or somewhere to go for almost every weekday.  We get up and get moving in the morning while the weather is still tolerable so by early afternoon when it’s starting to become uncomfortable outside, we’re back home where there’s air conditioning and a pool.

We’ve got a library day, beach day, grandma day, home day, and bike day.

I’m so happy that I get to spend summer vacation doing fun things with my kids.  Heck, it’s my JOB!  That’s sort of funny.
I work hard at having fun!!

I realized a year or so ago that, you only get so many summers with your kids.  When they’re really little there’s not much you CAN do and when they get older, they stop wanting to do things with their parents and start wanting to spend time with friends and girlfriends.  This is MY time.

Alan is going to be 16 in two months and he’s already spending most of his time with his girlfriend.  Michael is 10.5 and wanting to go hang out with friends.  There’s still a LOT of limits on that, but I know it’ll only be a couple more years before there’s not and then he won’t be around much through the summer anymore.  Eddie is my baby, and I’ve still got a good 6 years with him yet :)  That makes me feel happy.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Time is fleeting.  It slips away from you.  I used to be so focused on where I was going and looking forward that I was always losing time and missing what was right here in front of me.  I’m so glad that I was able to change my focus in a permanent way.

I don’t want to miss the childhoods of my children.  I don’t want to have them sitting right here with me and miss it because I was so focused on when they’ll be grown up and “out of my hair.”  I think too many parents see raising kids as something they’re expected to do.  Something that they have to do.  Something that should be approached and pushed through to minimize discomfort, boredom, or responsibility.

“Go play, I’m busy.”  ~  “I’d LOVE to, but I can’t because I have kids.” ~ “When I’m X years old, these kids will finally be 18 and moving out!”

That used to be me… in a BIG way.  As it turns out though, you can TOTALLY enjoy kids.  You can laugh and run and play with them.  They’re there to MAKE you stop looking ahead so far.  Kids aren’t fun when you’re looking over their heads and into the future.

Kids are only fun when you’re right there with them in THAT moment.  That is where all the fun and laughter and enjoyment is.
