Spiritual Fishing?

June 14th, 2011

Today is a big day for us here at Baugher’s Summer Camp.  We’re going fishing!

poleToday we get a lesson in what it really means to eat meat.  A lesson on how if you’re eating meat of any kind, some living thing gave it’s life for you.

This is a lesson that I don’t think very many people learn in life.  We consume tons of meat on a constant basis, but very few people ever really stop to think about where that meat actually came from.  Very few even momentarily consider that the meat they consume once belonged to a living, breathing Being.

I’ve only ever been fishing maybe twice in my life, but I’ve always loved eating fish.  My boys love fish too, and they love the idea of fishing.  Sounds like a win-win to me.

I went and got my $20 fishing license yesterday, and while we were there, we got three poles and a small tackle box with sinkers, bobbers, and hooks.  I can’t tolerate the idea of impaling a live worm on a hook and then drowning it, so we’re going to grab some fake bait on our way to the water today :)

And because I love any opportunity to teach my children Spiritual practices, we’re also going to talk about how we don’t take any more from nature than we need.  We’re going to Bless the water before we fish and we’re going to actually thank the fish for its contribution to our sustenance before we kill it.

I know fishing is fun and relaxing, and I’m looking forward to sitting in the sunshine, sharing a beautiful afternoon with my kids, but I am really feeling a lot of reverence here.  I’m feeling this is a sacred act.  The hunting and killing to sustain and flourish.

It doesn’t feel “wrong” but I definitely feel the need to approach with honor and respect and gratitude and reverence for the sacrifice that’s being given.

This new hobby of ours also makes me feel a little more self sustainable.

The garden is going well.  I planted from seed in the waxing moon in May, and transplanted in the waxing moon in June.  So far, so good.  But it’s nice to know we now have a meat source that doesn’t depend on anyone else too.

June’s Lunar Garden Planting & Transplanting

June 3rd, 2011

My favorite days of June are here!

The kids are officially home for summer vacation.  Our days will be filled with walks, swimming, cookouts, swimming, library visits, swimming, bike rides, swimming.

I ♥ Summer!!

As a side note to the lunar planting, our summer solstice (here in the North) will be happening on June 21st.  And on Wednesday June 15th there will be a full moon with a lunar eclipse.  We had three awesome group meditations for the New Moon and solar eclipse on June 1st.  The group meet on the Full Moon promises to be awesome!  If you’d like to attend, you can sign up here.

At 4:36am EDT yesterday, Friday June 3rd, the moon reentered the sign of Cancer.  That means I’m spending the weekend transplanting the seeds that I started in Cancer last month.  I love playing in the garden!

This month’s transplanting schedule is as follows:

Saturday June 4th is waxing in Cancer.  I’m transplanting cabbage, lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, and my herbs.

Sunday June 12th is waxing in Scorpio.  I’ll be transplanting beans, squash, peas, peppers, and pumpkin.

Tuesday June 14th is waxing in Sagittarius.  Time to transplant the onions.

Thursday June 16th is waning in Capricorn.  Good for potatoes, beets, carrots, and radishes.

The best days to destroy weeds and trim to retard growth are:

Tuesday June 7th and all day Wednesday the 8th~

Tuesday June 14th and  Wednesday June 15th~

Saturday June 18th and Sunday June 19th~

Thursday June 24th and Friday June 25th~

Tuesday June 28th and Wednesday June 29th~

These all make great days for mowing the lawn too ;)

Favorite Memories & Finding a Better Way

May 9th, 2011

Greetings Friends!

I hope all you mothers had a great day yesterday, and I hope all you children spent time with your mothers.

Here are some of my favorite moments in mother history.

But they’re not so little anymore.  Here is my new favorite pic of us.  This is us at the creek for Mother’s Day for our annual, family picnic.

There was rum at the picnic. __Snicker*__

After we got home from the picnic, I spent the rest of the afternoon and evening with my hands in the dirt, tilling and planting.  I got my new garden beds dug out and refilled with compost on Saturday, so yesterday was spent just playing in the dirt and planting the first round that was scheduled to go in while the moon is in Cancer.

Tomorrow is the group call with Guruji!  I’m finding myself really super excited about it.

Today, I’m building a split-rail fence out of twine and substantial sticks from the woods.  I refuse to spend up to a couple hundred dollars for fencing to go around my garden bed when I have four acres of natural, unsprayed materials that are free and green.  The sole purpose of the fence is to catch and disperse errant dog pee.

The dog isn’t picky on price.

He’s an equal opportunity urinater.
