Defining Dilemma

June 24th, 2010

I know this girl who is an insomniac.  She walks around complaining about how tired she is and how little she slept the night before.  I read her Facebook updates from 2am about how she’s “Of course NOT sleeping again!” and random thoughts on how she’ll feel rested again SOMEDAY.

I’ve been paying extra special attention to how I define myself lately.  We are the words we say.  Most especially the ones we say to define our current state of health, wealth, and happiness.  We develop these conditioned responses to life and go on auto pilot thinking and feeling exactly what we’ve been conditioned to.

I’ve noticed that when I’m tired, I mope.  When I mope, I slouch, whine, complain, and behave in a completely different way from my norm.  This exacerbates the tiredness I feel.  As the exhaustion grows with my encouragement in word and deed, I become a victim.  A victim of every person who wants something from me.  Of every task that requires my focus.  Of the evening in general.  Poor, poor put upon me.

I caught myself doing this not too long ago and became VERY astutely aware of myself all of a sudden.  I sat down and thought about it.

I took notice of how I was increasing the discomfort I was feeling with every word I said and every move I made.  Each move came with a mental commentary about how very tired I was and wha wha wha.

Then I closed my eyes and allowed the tiredness to engulf me.  I FELT it.  It didn’t feel BAD.  It felt gratifying.  Even, good.  I thought about what I’d done that day that made me feel so tired and I smiled.  I began thanking my body for being so strong and enduring through my days.

The exhaustion I’d felt was abating.  My body felt tried, but my mind felt clearer.  I was no longer actively telling myself how tired and uncomfortable and put upon I was and therefore I stopped amplifying all those feelings inside of me.

I have to wonder how well my friend would sleep if she’d stop telling herself not to.
