Be the Change!

July 1st, 2009

ZenI’m an instant gratification kinda girl. I love when something happens and you’re able to immediately see the bigger picture and reason behind it. Especially when it comes to my boys! There’s nothing quite as gratifying, in my opinion, than telling a child something and immediately seeing the light of understanding dawn on their face.

So we’re driving down the road, heading into town and we come to the first stoplight out by the interstate and the car that is now in front of me is going way below the speed limit. It pulls over into the turning lane at the last second and I had to brake and slow down even MORE. As I was about to speed out around it, the light turned yellow and I knew I wasn’t making the light.

I came to a stop, a little annoyed with the other guys driving. But I reminded myself as I always do, that I am always exactly where I’m supposed to be at any given moment. With that thought, Michael(9) pipes up from the backseat and says, “You SO coulda made that light Mom!”

I love an opportunity to teach the kids something or communicate with them in a conscious way to help them see how they create their reality. I love working with them on energy output control too. In fact, it’s one of my favorites because it not only teaches them self control but it helps them to practice responding instead of reacting.

I turned to Michael in the backseat and told him, “It’s better to arrive safely. We’ll get there when we get there.”

He smiled in agreement and when the light turned green, we continued on into town. As we came to the top of the big hill that marks the city limits, a young girl obviously in a hurry, pulled RIGHT out in front of us. I hit the brake in plenty of time and we avoided collision, but the sudden jolt got every one’s attention.

Michael’s voice chimes in from the backseat, “She needs to focus a little more on arriving safely and a little less on arriving quickly… ”

I love those moments. He totally got it.

It got me thinking about how children will always do as we do, not as we say. You don’t have to really worry about what you’re teaching you kids if you’re living a conscious, truth based, joy filled life. They will readily follow right in your footsteps. This was the moment that Michael Jackson came on the radio singing “Man in the Mirror”. I smiled at the synchronicity of it as I pulled up to a stop sign and noticed that I was also on Jackson Street.

I’m starting with the man in the mirror. I’m asking him to change his ways. And no message could’ve been any clearer. If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change.

How much could we as parents really truly change the world by simply living conscious lives and raising our children to do the same. My Spiritual path has always been just that…. MY path. I only in the past year or so realized that I was doing my children a disservice by not talking with THEM about it. Christians take their kids to Sunday school. That’s how I was raised. I think it’s harder to be candid with your kids when you’re not also following someone elses directive.

I know, for me, it can be hard for me to verbalize what I believe because I’m not just repeating what I’ve been told to believe. I do my best though and my kids get it.

Share with your kids. Together, we’re creating a conscious generation of adults to come!
